What's in a name?
Jupiter and Juno Beach ~ When the Spaniards arrived in the 1500s, they found a local village called Hobe (HO-bay). The name survives at Hobe Sound in Martin County.
When English Settlers arrived in the 1800s, they saw the name and thought it was Spanish for Jove, the latin name for the Greek god Zeus. The British favored the more common Latin name for Zeus ~ Jupiter.
A sister settlement to Jupiter was then built along the lake Worth area and so named Juno ~ wife of Jupiter/Zeus.
When Tequesta, a village of Jupiter to the north was developed by Charles Martyn, a local resident in the 1950s, he liked the name of the native indians whom had helped establish the early settlers of the Jonathan Dickenson party from europe in 1696.
